KAOLIN

Kaolin is an aluminosilicate mineral derived from the decomposition of feldspar from igneous rock. The term kaolin derives from the name of the deposit in China where the mineral was first mined – Kao-ling.

In ceramics manufacturing, kaolin is used to modify the properties of a ceramic body with the ball clay (plastic clay), primarily to control and adjust the casting rate of the ceramic body.

In addition to casting rate control, kaolin provides:

  • improved body whiteness
  • rheological stability
  • Improved fluidity
  • addition of alumina
